Life in the fast lane: Google Fiber coming to Triangle, Charlotte

Life in the Triangle is about to get faster – at least online. Google officials confirmed Tuesday that Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Morrisville, Garner and Carrboro are among the latest U.S. cities to be outfitted with Google Fiber, which promises Internet speeds 100 times faster than existing connections and a high-definition television service. Google schedules press conference; paper says Google Fiber coming to Raleigh

Google will host a press conference to discuss “what’s in store for our community” in Raleigh on Tuesday afternoon. Gov. Pat McCrory is scheduled to be there. Google won’t discuss specifics about what the news is. However, The Wall Street Journal says the event is to announce that the Triangle is an expansion site for Google Fiber, its ultrafast Internet service. No Google Fiber news today; Raleigh exec ‘still expecting year-end decision’

No commitment from Google today to bring Google Fiber to the Triangle but work continues toward that possibility. Gail Roper, chief information officer for the City of Raleigh, says she is “still expecting a year-end decision” from Google about whether the Internet giant will choose the Triangle for a Google Fiber network deployment. “We are still working with Google on an agenda of items and processes,” Roper said in an interview Tuesday morning at a fiber conference in Raleigh.
