Google will host a press conference to discuss “what’s in store for our community” in Raleigh on Tuesday afternoon. Gov. Pat McCrory is scheduled to be there. Google won’t discuss specifics about what the news is.

However, The Wall Street Journal says the event is to announce that the Triangle is an expansion site for Google Fiber, its ultrafast Internet service.

Citing unnamed sources, the Journal said Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville also have been selected.

Last week, WRAL TechWire reported that Google was committed to the Triangle for expansion, based on industry sources.

WRAL.com will carry that announcement live beginning at 1 p.m.

Speculation has centered on whether the news is an announcement about deployment of Google Fiber .

The Triangle has been on a short list for expansion of Google Fiber. An announcement had been expected in December but was postponed.

“Leaders from around the Triangle” are also scheduled to take part in the press conference, according to the media invitation sent for the event.

Last week, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) sent invitations to events in Raleigh and Durham on Wednesday and Thursday. Similar notices were sent for an event in Charlotte.
