Retiring Institute for Emerging Issues director ready to embark on next phase of his life

Leslie Boney, who has served as the director of the Institute for Emerging Issues and vice provost for outreach and engagement for the last five years, announced his retirement in February, with an effective date of May 1 from in his dual-appointment positions. He’s spent the last two months finishing up some loose ends and was feted by friends and colleagues, but he’s ready to embark on the next phase of his life.

Our “Connecting in Crisis” webinars were a weekly witness to the power of realistic optimism. We heard from folks working to save businesses, connect schoolkids, protect the vulnerable, keep the water on, feed the hungry, find the lost, address equity and fix systems. The heroes, it turned out, fit no profile: they were men and women, black, brown and white, rural and urban, students and seniors. They are a reason for optimism.
