Notable news stories from last week included: NC’s Department of Health & Human Services launched a COVID-19 contact-tracing app; the lawyer of a class-action lawsuit against IBM says hundreds of former employees reached out about joining the case; the Research Triangle Foundation broke ground on its new $1.5 billion mixed-use space, Hub RTP; a report from UNC’s Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise offered insight into how COVID-19 is permanently reshaping the economy; a new report details how Raleigh is poised to rebound from the pandemic; Apple stores in Raleigh and Durham reopened with limited services; Cisco unveiled a plan to advance diversity and social justice efforts; Truist partnered with the NC Rural Center on a $40 million nonprofit fund for minority-owned businesses; six NC startups were selected for the Google for Startups Black Founders Exchange program.

Several North Carolina companies secured new funding last week, including Raleigh-based Rediscovery Life Sciences ($4.5 million), Morrisville-based Metabolon ($72 million), Raleigh-based ArenaCX ($2 million – read more in our interview with CEO Doc Shufelt), Durham-based Courtroom5 ($20,000) and RTP-based BioAesthetics ($4.5 million).
