Startup CEOs Get Too Much Credit For What is a Team Sport

F. Scott Moody is the co-founder and CEO of Raleigh-based K4Connect, and former co-founder and CEO of AuthenTec, which was acquired by Apple in 2012. He’s a frequent speaker on entrepreneurism and active in supporting entrepreneurial activities in Africa. It’s been a year now, but I can remember last September 10th like it was yesterday. That was the day that Apple first announced the iPhone 5S and, most importantly (in my personal opinion!), the first implementation of the Touch ID. You see, Apple had bought the company I helped found, AuthenTec, in late 2012 and the Touch ID was...

The Future of ThinkHouse Starts Today

Eight 20-something men in a house may not sound like the most productive of work environments. But the founders of ThinkHouse say at least five new Triangle-area startups are growing and thriving thanks to the last six months those men spent living and working together in a renovated house in Boylan Heights. Though the vision for ThinkHouse is much bigger than a house in Raleigh—at least 40 houses in cities around the world and new plans for TeachHouses and HealthHouses—founders Christopher Gergen (pictured right) and Jason Widen (middle) of Forward Impact, Brooks Bell (left) of Brooks Bell Interactive and...

WATCH: Maker Startup Weekend Recap

Drone claws for disaster relief, bird feeders that photograph and tweet images of birds and a smart tracking device for wandering kids took home top honors earlier this month at the first Triangle-area Maker Startup Weekend. And all three projects will continue on in the weeks and months to follow. Organizers of the event consider it a success—140 people participated and few were repeat Startup Weekend attendees. There were 13-year-old kids and 65-year-old adults all learning about 3-D printing and design thinking. They roamed the streets of downtown Raleigh interviewing people and demoing prototypes for products they dreamt up...

Can Raleigh be the Place for Makers?

Three men planning the first-ever Triangle Maker Startup Weekend were wandering around N.C. State’s campus one recent night when they stumbled on an event at the college’s Crafts Center. A Gathering of Makers, it was called. A metalsmith, potter, woodworker and crafter headlined the night, but when the Startup Weekend guys introduced themselves, their event and the idea of creating prototype objects using 3-D printers in an old shipping container-turned-creative space, the discussion quickly turned into a debate. Can technology-powered prototyping be a creative outlet? Or is it killing craft and creativity? The artists feared the latter; the men...

American Underground Expands to Downtown Raleigh

Wait. Didn’t you just open 50+ new spaces at Main Street in downtown Durham? Last summer, when Adam Klein and I talked about the simultaneous expansions of ExitEvent (we were getting ready to do Socials in Raleigh and Charlotte) and American Underground (they had just announced Underground @Main, which officially opened last month), he already had plans to expand out to Raleigh. In fact, it was one of the reasons he took the job as Underground’s Chief Strategist. It wasn’t just about real estate in the American Tobacco district— had it been, it wouldn’t have been the position for...
