Escape This Weekend With the Escapist Expo

This weekend, Durham will be flooded by gamers from across the country coming to the second annual Escapist Expo. The convention is the brainchild of The Escapist, a reputable member of the Durham startup scene since 2005. Last December, we covered the sale of The Escapist to Alloy Digital, a media portfolio whose sites serve over 95 million page views per month. Years before I knew The Escapist’s team personally, I was familiar with their work. In 2007, The Escapist began publishing the world’s most watched video game review series, Zero Punctuation. Outside of video reviews, The Escapist covers...

NC DevCon v5 Coming to the Triangle

If you make your living writing code, continuing education is a crucial issue. Part of being an effective developer is keeping on top of the latest exploits, updates, and best practices. You could make a valid argument for developers requiring just as much continuing education as doctors, lawyers, and engineers. Many developers stay up to date by learning through collaboration with peers and by using different online resources such as Udacity and Code Academy. Others often turn to conferences to stay updated on the latest technological developments. The conference game is about being able to market yourself as knowledgeable...

Cherokee Challenge Finale Thursday in Raleigh

Back in April, I covered the Cherokee Challenge and its application process. The Second Annual Cherokee Challenge Finale Event will be held on September 12th at Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh. After going through a rigorous application process, three companies survived and will be presenting at this year’s capstone event. The Cherokee Challenge Finale serves as a place for each year’s class to showcase their entrepreneurial work to the public, potential investors, and the tech community at large. The accelerator’s finale event will also be the conclusion to Triangle Entrepreneurship Week. JT Vaughn, one of the main organizers...

Draper University Extends Application Deadline to August 26th

Lie detection, martial arts and cooking paired with design thinking and minimum viable product? That doesn’t sound like your father’s online learning curriculum. You also swear to abide by the “Superhero Oath of Draper University.” My favorite clause from the oath: “I will pursue fairness, openness, health and fun with all that I encounter. Mostly fun.”  The superhero branding extends throughout the entire Draper University experience, and students recite this oath before classes. Draper has attributed his concept for Draper University to be a mix of Hogwarts, Singularity University, and his own schooling experiences. The school is still brand...

Teen Tech Camp Hosts Future Developers

Refresh The Triangle and Durham County Library are teaming up to sponsor a Teen Tech Camp led by the Triangle’s very own Julia Elman and Sarah Kahn. Julia and Sarah came up with the idea after a push for new opportunities by Refresh members to volunteer and give back to the community. Inspired by Young Coders Tutorials at Pycon and other similar events, they sat down to create Teen Tech Camp and tackle this education disparity locally. In its second year, the Teen Tech Camp’s core mission is to educate and inspire children between the ages of 12-18 on...

Update: NewME Comes to the American Tobacco Campus This Fall

Update: 7/11/13: According to NewME, due to an interest in accommodating a lot of currently out of town students from the local universities, Google and NewMe have decided to postpone until November 9th. The NewME Accelerator is the next big thing to come to the Triangle this fall (was this summer). NewME (Short for New Media Entrepreneurship) is a residential tech startup accelerator sponsored by some names you might be familiar with (Google, Andreessen HoroWitz, Tagged), and their focus is to target underserved and minority groups generally not seen in leadership roles in startups and entrepreneurship, including African-Americans, Latinos,...

BoostSuite Introduces Headline Optimizer to Automatically Test Web Page Headlines

For a lot of people, marketing is their bread and butter. For others, it’s still a giant mystery. Seeing new and exciting products come out of the Triangle startup ecosystem is always a big deal, especially in a field like marketing where so many do not know where to go. When it comes to website marketing, BoostSuite is essentially what the Adobe Marketing Cloud wishes it was. I sat down with Aaron Houghton, Co-Founder and CEO of BoostSuite, to get an update on their latest feature and the status of BoostSuite. At its core, the BoostSuite platform is an...

Cherokee Challenge Will Give $20K to Environmental Startups

I first heard of Cherokee Investments years ago through a panel that Cherokee Investment Partners Founder and CEO Tom Darden spoke at in 2007 at UNC regarding entrepreneurship, smart investing, and the future of Cherokee. It’s really great to see that, over half a decade later, not only is Cherokee continuing to flourish, but the Challenge is also in it’s third year. If you are reading this article and are an environmentally related startup, (or thinking of starting one) then you should immediately drop whatever you’re doing (once you finish reading of course) and immediately go and apply for...

Viva RTP New Tech!

ExitEvent Last covered the RTP New Tech Meetup last May, when it was resurrected from death by StartupSpot’s (formerly VCHub) President, Jeff Boardman. I sat down with him this week to hear about the future for the meetup. RTP New Tech helps to fill a big void that currently exists in the triangle startup ecosystem: Face to face interaction. Like ExitEvent and other similar affairs, RTP New Tech’s mission statement, according to Jeff, is to “Be a platform that allows startup communities to get feedback, pitch to an investor, show a new product, and in general get advice.” Once...
