Lessons From The Startup Factory: Are You Doing Something Worth Failing At?

My willingness to fail gives me the ability to succeed. — Vinod Khosla  Chris, Dave and Lizzy of The Startup Factory have each been an integral part of my startup and of many that call the Triangle home.  As you’ve probably heard, they’re shutting the fund down after several good years. And so I wanted to take the time to write about all that they’ve accomplished and reflect upon the lessons we can continue to learn from the way they’ve run the fund and served as the cornerstone of our now vibrant community.  There will be plenty of time for the post-mortem later, but questions always...

Why Trinket is Against North Carolina HB2

North Carolina recently passed the controversial HB2 in a special session with little time for debate or discussion. Amongst other things, the bill imposes a statewide “non-discrimination” policy that does not protect citizens from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. At Trinket, our mission is to bring Code to Every Classroom, and we think this bill runs directly counter to our mission.    While there are plenty of other ways of examining this bill’s negative effects, and others are doing that good work, as CEO of Trinket I want to call attention to the harmful impact...

When success doesn’t feel successful

This piece was originally published on Medium: https://medium.com/@hauspoor/success-doesn-t-feel-successful-472412d1899f#.mcsnlglq4. How do we disentangle the things that look or feel successful from those that actually make us successful? I read a book several years ago called The Millionaire Next Door that’s been very influential on my financial outlook. Lately it’s been encouraging me to redefine, as best I can, exactly when I feel like I’m being successful professionally. Let me explain. One of the Millionaire Next Door’s main insights is that the very things that make you feel wealthy, like buying expensive things, actually make you poorer. Whereas the behaviors that...

Life is Long (A Response to Paul Graham’s January Essay)

This piece was originally published on Medium. The caption with the photo above stated “Tempus fugit”, which in Latin means “Time flies.” Paul Graham is one of my favorite writers. I believe I’ve read every one of the essays he’s published on his website, some many times. In every one of them, there is a simple, well-stated nugget that has helped me understand startups better or, moreso in his recent work, think about what matters most in life.  His most recent essay “Life is Short” makes the case stated in the title and concludes with a set of aphorisms: “Relentlessly prune bullshit, don’t...

Life During Wartime (As An Entrepreneur)

This blog post originally appeared on Medium. tl;dr: Most companies are at war. Find your allies and fight the good fight  In The Hard Thing About Hard Things and elsewhere, Ben Horowitz writes about the difference between peacetime and wartime for companies. Peacetime is when when a company is on top, profitable, and is dominating an industry, like Microsoft in the 1990s or Google in the 2000s. But the reality is that most businesses, especially technology startups, are in a continual state of war. The company is fighting for its life. Fighting for relevance in the marketplace. Fighting against the...

Envy is Your Enemy

tl;dr Consciously identify your own success with that of those around you.  Progress down the path towards excellence means being surrounded by the success of others. This can induce natural feelings of desire to experience others’ success ourselves. Combined with the illusion that others must fail for us to succeed, this generates envy. To avoid the destructive, isolating effects of envy, dispel the zero-sum illusion by consciously identifying your own success with that of those around you.  Surrounded by Success  The best way to be successful is to be surrounded by the kind of success you’re seeking. In startups,...

Let's Be Catalysts for Coding Education

There are so many interesting things going on in education in our area. On August 7, the Raspberry Pi Foundation is sending its developer and educator Ben Nuttall to NC State’s Hunt Library to talk about how the tiny DIY computer is being used in education. But this is more than a story of how North Carolina is getting international attention, it’s about why building community is about amplifying others rather than hogging the bullhorn. Rasbperry Pi: Tasty Coding Education Cambridge, U.K.-based Raspberry Pi has a global community of tinkerers who are making awesome things on the device (including...
