RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Red Hat cofounder and Triangle tech legend Bob Young is making a new investment play, this time in artificial intelligence.

Young is one of the angel investors reported by TechCrunch in Liquid AI, a spinoff from MIT, which emerged from stealth mode Wednesday by announcing $37.5 million in funding.

Other investors include OSS Capital, WordPress parent Automattic, and Samsung Next.

The company’s technology is based on what’s called a liquid neural network.

Here’s how MIT describes the technology:

“MIT researchers have developed a type of neural network that learns on the job, not just during its training phase. These flexible algorithms, dubbed ‘liquid’ networks, change their underlying equations to continuously adapt to new data inputs. The advance could aid decision making based on data streams that change over time, including those involved in medical diagnosis and autonomous driving.”
