RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – After weeks of mixed data on major job boards, local hiring activity appears to be getting back on track, albeit slowly. Our latest count of Triangle-area jobs on national job boards shows a slight uptick from the trends of the past month, mired by economic uncertainties around rising inflation, interest rate increases, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

Every Sunday, WRAL TechWire tracks the total number of local positions posted on national job boards, then we compare it to the previous week’s count. The totals have been mixed in recent weeks, registering an especially notable drop two weeks ago.

But the job market saw somewhat of a correction last week, with some cities faring better than others. For example, Adzuna has 1,354 more jobs in Wake County and Raleigh than it did seven days ago, but it shows 285 fewer jobs in Durham. Similarly, LinkedIn shows 1,542 more jobs in Raleigh and Durham than it did a week ago, but there are 315 fewer jobs in Chapel Hill and Johnston County. Indeed.com also shows the net addition of 118 positions in Raleigh, but a drop of -140 in Durham, -158 in Chapel Hill and -10 in Johnston County.

This comes as the Bureau of Labor Statistics released a new set of data showing that North Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in February, down from January’s revised rate of 3.9%. Comparatively, the state had a 5.4% unemployment rate in February 2021. Overall, the number of people employed in North Carolina rose by 18,085 over the course of last month.

WRAL TechWire’s weekly Jobs Report compiles the latest information from the region’s top job boards, offering a breakdown of how many jobs are posted, which companies are hiring, and what positions are most in-demand. We’ve also included upcoming job fairs, student-centric resources, and a list of Twitter accounts that track local job openings.
