As Monday morning rolls in, we’re providing TechWire readers with a quick recap of the past week’s news headlines.
Notable news stories from last week included: State lawmakers are considering a $1 million proposal to bring satellite internet to rural areas via SpaceX’s Starlink program; Danish tech firm Umbraco picked Charlotte for its new U.S. headquarters; NetApp, which has a large campus in RTP, confirmed it will be laying off around 5.5% of its workforce; RTP startup Get Spiffy is expanding its fleet maintenance service to six more markets; a new M&A report from Charlotte-based Decision Point shows that the tech market is moving more toward cloud and virtual environments.
Several North Carolina companies secured new funding last week, including Charlotte-based ThreatSwitch ($1.6 million), the Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network ($5.5 million NSF grant), Durham-based Beyu Caffé ($220,000), Charlotte nonprofit Prospera ($100,000 NC IDEA Ecosystem grant), Durham-headquartered ReViral ($44 million), Carrboro-based Inhalon Biopharma (nearly $2 million), RTP-based T3D Therapeutics ($740,000 grant from Bill Gates and the Alzheimer’s Association), Raleigh-based TerMir ($444,000) and Hickory-based Translational Imaging Innovations ($1.5 million SBIR award).
