GARNER – Improved Nature, a plant protein startup focusing on artificial meat, looks like a tasty investment to at least one financial backer.

The company disclosed in an SEC filing on Monday that it has secured $1 million in equity from one invester.

Improved Nature says it wants to add another $1 million.

In 2018 Improved Nature raised more than $3 million in debt as the plant protein craze was just getting started. The company launched in 2015.

The funding comes after Improved Nature recently struck a deal with Perky Jerky.

The new “Plant-Based Jerky” line launched last fall.

It will come in two flavors:

  • Sea Salt & Pepper
  • Tasty Teriyaki

Improved Nature products are built around proprietary technology that it says “turns plant protein into plant-based meat alternatives that provide the same taste and texture consumers desire.”

Other products available include:

  • Nature’s Filets, Breaded & Flavored
  • Nature’s Large Filets, Breaded & Flavored
  • Nature’s Nuggets, Breaded & Flavored
  • Nature’s Tenders, Breaded & Flavored

Perky Jerky products are available at 40,000 locations nationwide, including  Whole Foods Market, Kroger, Target, Wal-Mart, Costco, The Home Depot, Sprouts and 7-Eleven.
