GARNER – From burgers to chicken and now … the “fake meat” or plant-based protein craze is hitting the jerky market as Garner-based Improved Nature strikes a deal with Perky Jerky.
The new “Plant-Based Jerky” line will be available at select stores beginning in September, the companies announced Thursday.
It will come in two flavors:

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Improved Nature launched in 2015, its products built around proprietary technology that it says “turns plant protein into plant-based meat alternatives that provide the same taste and texture consumers desire.”
“We are very excited to partner with Perky Jerky for this new product line because they already have an excellent reputation in the industry,” said Rody Hawkins, CEO and co-founder of the company. “Together, we have been able to produce a delicious plant-based protein jerky product that will satisfy even the most discerning jerky eater. The best part – our products are not only good for you, but they’re also good for the planet.”
Hawkins is “the same person that invented Lunchables and worked to extend the shelf life on the Slim Jim is now the president of a plant-based meat company,” says the Good Food Institute.
