AT&T says DirecTV deal could slow future price hikes

AT&T’s CEO told Congress Tuesday that his company’s purchase of DirecTV will help slow increases in programming prices, but won’t lead to a decrease in prices. CEO Randall Stephenson spoke to two Congressional committees to defend AT&T’s (NYSE: T) $48.5 billion deal to buy the country’s largest satellite TV...

Apple television? Stay tuned for ‘iTV’ in late 2013

It’s no secret that Apple wants to get into the living room by making its own TV set, and there have been plenty of rumors and reports about how and when it’s going to happen. Now, an analyst says he’s learned that the set will go on sale late this year, for $1,500 to $2,500. In a research note Wednesday, Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets says the “iTV” will be 60 inches on the diagonal, but could also come in 50- and 55-inch versions. Apple will also release a small “iRing” that fits on the viewer’s finger, allowing...

iPhone joins T-Mobile smartphone lineup on April 12

T-Mobile USA will start offering the iPhone on April 12, filling what its CEO said was “a huge void” in its phone lineup. T-Mobile, the fourth-largest of the national U.S. phone companies, has been losing customers to the bigger companies, which all sell the iPhone. “This is a big deal for us,” T-Mobile CEO John Legere said Tuesday at an event in New York. The company will charge $100 up front for the iPhone 5, then another $20 per month for two years. That’s on top of service fees for voice, text and data that start at $50 per...

Review: Technology in Galaxy S 4 doesn’t come together

The Galaxy S 4, Samsung’s latest and greatest, has a cute feature we’ll probably see in a lot of phones soon: You can shoot both yourself and your surroundings at the same time, using the front- and back-mounted cameras. It’s a bit like having a two-camera film crew follow you around. But other than that, it’s hard to point to anything that will set the world on fire in the new phone, revealed Thursday at an event in New York. The S 4 has what you’d expect from a new smartphone: a bigger screen and a faster processor. It...

Apple’s victory: What does it mean for consumers?

Apple’s $1 billion court victory over Samsung poses a lot of questions for consumers. Will Samsung phones still be available for sale? Will they be more expensive? Will owners of existing phones need to worry? A federal jury in San Jose, Calif., ruled late Friday that Samsung, the world’s largest maker of phones, had copied features of the iPhone and the iPad. That included the “bounce-back” behavior when a user scrolls to the end of a page and the ability to zoom in on an image by spreading two fingers. The jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. That...

Apple sags as consumers buy cheaper iPhones, iPads

NEW YORK, N.Y. – More consumers are buying the least expensive iPhones and iPads, a new phenomenon that is causing Apple’s breakneck growth rate to slow. On Tuesday, Apple Inc. revealed that both revenue and net income posted increases of just over 20 percent – cause for celebration at most companies, but meager by Apple standards. Apple’s growth was the slowest in more than two years, and failed to meet analyst expectations. “The sheen is off the apple: It was a miss, no question about it,” said David Rolfe, chief investment officer at Wedgewood Partners Inc. Apple routinely blows...

Apple CEO Tim Cook emerges from Steve Jobs’ shadow

NEW YORK — Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook has long seen as the humorless and unemotional guy running the show from behind the scenes. But he is beginning to reveal a more assertive and eloquent side, hinting that he’s learning to shoulder more of Steve Jobs’ role as a front man and leader. On a conference call with journalists and financial analysts late Tuesday, Cook showed some fire when talking about competitors, echoing the combative Jobs. He also spouted a vivid metaphor that spread like wildfire over Twitter before the call was over. Most Apple watchers have sized...

The patent scramble: Microsoft-AOL deal is just latest

Review: New iPad screen is eye-opening upgrade

NEW YORK — Beware the new Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad, not because it’s an inferior product, but because it’s a superior one. Using one is like living the life of a millionaire for a day, then getting dumped back in your regular life. Your eyes are now opened to how miserable your existence is. The big culprit here is its stunner screen. It has four times the resolution of the previous models. That’s a big, big jump, which makes text and high-resolution images look amazingly sharp and clear. High-definition movies look amazingly detailed. At first, I wasn’t that excited...
