NC Biotechnology Center awards $3.5M in grants, loans

Life science start-up companies, event sponsors, researchers and educators received $3.58 million in loans and grants from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center during the final quarter of the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013. The awards, in 14 programs, went to successful applicants across the state to support life science entrepreneurship, technology commercialization and education. In total, NCBiotech provided 151 awards during fiscal 2013, worth more than $10.7 million. That compared to 127 awards the previous year, valued at just over $8.6 million. Targacept’s schizophrenia treatment reaches important trial milestone

Targacept (Nasdaq: TRGT) has completed recruitment of patients for the Phase 2b study of its schizophrenia treatment, the Winston-Salem biopharmaceutical firm announced last week. The company has developed TC-5619 as a treatment for the negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction caused by schizophrenia. Targacept expects promising results by the end of the year. Biofuels Center targets western NC for $1.1M in grants

The deadline is Monday, Feb. 25 to request a chunk of the $1.1 million in grants from the Biofuels Center of North Carolina to expand biofuels activity in western North Carolina.
