RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Companies with offices in the Triangle continue to hire, with some looking to hire hundreds of workers. And Meta, the parent company of Facebook, may soon be looking to add technology talent in the region, as the company confirmed that it has opened an office space at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham where it plans to house at least 100 software engineers.
However, there are signs the jobs market is evolving with some companies turning toward project-based workers and consultants.
That’s according to search firm executive Josh Haymond, who told WRAL TechWire that while layoffs are affecting workers at large, national, publicly-traded companies, those very same workers may find openings in the Triangle where employers are looking to add technology talent.

But high-skill workers are very much in demand. An example: The City of Raleigh, recently opened a search for a Smart Cities Manager and has dozens of other openings for roles that require technology skills.
“We definitely don’t feel, with Vaco as an example, nervous about the market,” said Haymond in an interview with WRAL TechWire. “Or that there’s a pullback from our clients.”
So while there may continue to be turnover – as six in 10 workers are mulling changing jobs in 2023, a new study from LinkedIn found – what happens in the Triangle may be different than what happens nationwide, or in the tech sector alone.
“Consulting labor is going to be even more necessary, because it’s not as though the workload at these companies is going down,” said Haymond. “It’s the same workload with less people, which is a recipe for more turnover, unless those companies are backfilling with contract labor.”

So who is still hiring? Turns out, there are still job openings at 48 of the 50 of the region’s most well-known employers, as TechWire tracks weekly. We should note that hiring across all of those employers has slowed in 2023.
Meanwhile, there are still more than 3,100 openings at the firms who remain hiring for open roles (Channel Advisor and Amgen currently have no openings for full-time roles in the Triangle).
