RALEIGH – As the Triangle’s labor market remains competitive, Verizon is seeking to add workers, and continues to offer a signing bonus for new employees in the region.

A company spokesperson confirmed to WRAL TechWire that the company is providing a sign-on bonus of $2,500 for new retail sales representatives, and wrote in an email that the company continues to recruit in the region.

The company’s careers webpage lists 11 openings in retail sales, which would be based across the Triangle region, including roles in Knightdale, Garner, Wilson, Wake Forest, and Fuquay-Varina, as well as Durham and Raleigh.

In total, there are 143 openings within 50 miles of the center of the Triangle, according to Verizon’s careers webpage, including 51 technology roles.

Carrier wars continue

The company’s most recent hiring push is to add about 600 workers in retail positions, the spokesperson noted.  And it’s coming right after the latest release of PCMag’s annual wireless network carrier comparison, which found that for the Triangle, T-Mobile service led the way.

Consumers may also have seen recent campaigns from Verizon and T-Mobile that pit the two wireless companies against each other, as T-Mobile hit Verizon for what the company referred to as adding a “made-up fee” and announcing an incentive program to get consumers to switch service providers.  Verizon responded by hitting back at T-Mobile by saying that the company continues to “hoodwink” customers.

Earlier this year, Verizon announced it would raise its starting hourly wage to $20 per hour.  At the time, the company also instituted sign-on bonuses for some roles.

In the Triangle, and in other locations across the United States, some Verizon stores are operated by Victra, a Raleigh-based company that is a licensed reseller for Verizon.

Victra acquired Go Wireless earlier this year and is hiring for 38 positions based in North Carolina, according to its careers webpage.  Those roles include some retail sales consultant roles and some retail manager roles.

Representatives from Victra did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story from WRAL TechWire.
