CARY – Epic Games is playing hard ball.
On the same day it filed a lawsuit against Apple accusing the tech giant of “anti-competitive restraints and monopolistic practices,” the Cary-based games developer debuted a short event titled Nineteen Eighty-Fortnite in Fortnite’s Party Royale mode to mock its rival.
It premiered just minutes after Apple pulled Fortnite from the App Store for “violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments.”
Directed by Ridley Scott, the film is a parody of Apple’s iconic 1984 TV commercial that introduced the world to the Macintosh. It shows the computer maker as an upstart smashing the totalitarian control of Big Brother, presumably a stand-in for IBM, from George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984.
Flash forward to today: it appears Epic Games sees itself now as the little guy, despite the fact that the company is now valued at $17.2 billion after a mega raise closed last week.
