RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK — Job postings in the Triangle fell this week to the lowest numbers since WRAL TechWire began tracking this data some two years ago, according to the exclusive WRAL TechWire Jobs Report.

Numbers fell 3.15% this week, down to 206,787 active listings (not accounting for post duplications).

The jobs report aggregates data from 20 location-based job board searches. Current openings are down 32.25% compared to this time last year and down 3.47% from just a month ago.

Not all the news is grim. Some big companies in the Triangle have job openings:

The holiday dip

In 2022, job numbers dipped in the last week of the year — falling 7.46% between the last week of November and the last week of December.

But this year, numbers were already much lower in November 2023 than they were last year — down over 115,000 openings year-to-year (not counting for post duplications). So this year’s “holiday dip” brought current numbers to much lower.

Executive recruiter and career coach Caroline Ceniza-Levine wrote in Forbes last month that job seekers don’t necessarily have to pause their job search during the holidays — but for some, a pause could be advantageous.

“In addition to the increased networking opportunities from holiday parties and people’s overall festive mood, the push to year-end can encourage hiring to happen sooner than later,” said Ceniza-Levine in the article. “However, you also want to be at your best when you’re looking for a job. Now might not be a good time for you to focus on your job search.”
