MORRISVILLE — PlayMetrics, the Triangle-based creator of sports organization technology, has announced a partnership with Blue Star Innovation Partners.

Details on the partnership were hard to come by. However, the press release mentioned Blue Star’s expertise in “operational, software, and integrated payments” likely pointing to expanded features for the platform.

Blue Star Innovation Partners was cofounded in 2017 by Rob Wechsler, himself known for his work on the sports technology company Blue Star Sports. The VC firm’s other cofounder is Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

PlayMetrics has proved able to raise money. The company raised $5.25 million in August of 2022 via parent company eMinor, Inc. Last year’s fund-raising involved seven investors including the Triangle Tweener Fund. Durham VC group Bull City Venture Partners was also an early investor in the company. According to reports, both investors will exit under the terms of this partnership.

Jason Caplain of Bull City Venture Partners was complimentary of the announcement, especially in light of the challenging time economic landscape. Investment sluggishness that started last year has continued to result in a dip in funding.

“The market is completely frozen with transactions of this magnitude reserved for the very best companies,” Caplain said via email. “I think this puts a big spotlight on the work the team did building such a strong company.”

Wechsler, now the Blue Star Innovation Partners CEO, was enthusiastic about the partnership.

“We’ve been looking for a software company and management team that could form the foundation for what will be the marquee platform for youth sports organizations, and we believe we found it in PlayMetrics,” said Wechsler in the press release. “When we spoke to their customers, it was clear their experience with PlayMetrics supported our view – that PlayMetrics is on its way to becoming the definitive brand in youth sports technology.”

Created in 2017, PlayMetrics Club Operating System is focused on providing efficiencies for managing youth sports clubs. Mike Doernberg, the CEO and founder, previously worked on ReverbNation, SmartPath, and The Marathon Group; all three were acquired. Doernberg is also the co-founder of Adwerx and an advisor to Bull City Venture Partners.
