CHAPEL HILL – Need ideas and advice on starting or growing a business? You can register to attend a “fireside chat” with serial entrepreneur, UNC Professor and Blue Origin Astronaut Jim Kitchen teaches how to start for-profit, non-profit and social entrepreneurial ventures and raise funding.

The event is set for Jan. 18 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the MOSAIC development in Pittsboro’s Chatham Park.

Kitchen teaches how to start for-profit, non-profit and social entrepreneurial ventures and raise funding. He has coached hundreds of early stage companies, restaurants, bars, product & tech companies over last 25 years. He is the principal of a commercial real estate business specializing in acquiring apartment complexes, drug stores and other triple-net investments. In addition, Jim is an active angel investor, supporting the growth of Triangle’s entrepreneurial community.

Meet Jim

Professor Kitchen started his first business, which specialized in group tours to the Caribbean, while he was a UNC student. After selling his company to multinational travel conglomerate TUI PLC in 2007, he served as the director of TUI student acquisition department, helping to build one of the largest student travel companies in North America.

Professor Kitchen loves to travel and has visited all 193 UN recognized countries. Recently, he fulfilled a life-long goal of seeing our planet from space as a crew member on Blue Origin’s NS-20s rocket launched in March of 2022. Back on Earth in July ’22, he visited the very bottom of the planet, the Mariana Trench which is 7 miles below the ocean’s surface. Too get there, he rode in a titanium submarine. He is currently working on a book, detailing life lessons learned on a 30+ year journey around, above and below our planet.

Jim Kitchen has his MBA with honors from the University of Tennessee, his master’s degree in political management from George Washington University and his BA in Russian and East European studies at UNC-Chapel Hill.
