RALEIGH – Naren Gupta, an entrepreneur and venture capitalist who led Red Hat’s board of directors before the company’s acquisition by IBM, has died.

Gupta, 73, died Saturday, according to family and media reports.

The co-founder of Nexus Venture Partners, Gupta moved to the United States from India more than 50 years ago and later co-founded Integrated Systems which later was acquired by Intel, according to TechCrunch.

Red Hat named Gupta as its board chair when his predecessor Hugh Shelton retired in 2017. Gupta first joined Red Hat’s board in 2005.

Jim Whitehurst, CEO of Red Hat at the time of Gupta’s appointment as chair, said: “Naren is a well-respected leader. Coupled with his global technology industry experience, he is an ideal person for this role. Red Hat has already benefited greatly from his broad experience and his contributions as a dedicated member of our board. I look forward to working closely with Naren to continue Red Hat’s role as one of the world’s most innovative companies.”

IBM acquired Red Hat in July 2019.
