The season eight premiere of “Game of Thrones” brought in a series record 17.4 million viewers on Sunday night, according to HBO, with streaming giving the adventure series a boost.

The news came Monday as AT&T disclosed it was selling its stake in streaming service Hulu.

That includes 11.8 million television viewers who watched the popular fantasy drama on HBO at 9 p.m. Sunday night. The rest were viewers who watched two encore presentations, combined with those who streamed the show with the HBO Go or HBO Now apps. It had the “largest night of streaming activity ever for HBO,” according to the network.

The previous record for the show was the season seven finale, which nabbed 16.9 million viewers in August 2017. Viewership for Sunday’s premiere was up more than a million viewers from the season seven premiere in 2017.

“Thrones” has become a TV blockbuster at a time when there’s immense competition from streaming services and social media. The show gets a boost from delayed viewing, but its multiple storylines and spoilers make it ideal for appointment viewing, one of the few things left besides sports that is.

AT&T sells Hulu stake

AT&T will sell its minority stake in Hulu back to the streaming video service, the two companies announced Monday.

“We thank AT&T for their support and investment over the past two years and look forward to collaboration in the future,” Hulu CEO Randy Freer said in a statement. “WarnerMedia will remain a valued partner to Hulu for years to come as we offer customers the best of TV, live and on demand, all in one place.”

The transaction values Hulu at $15 billion. AT&T’s 9.5% interest in the company is valued at $1.43 billion, according to a press release. That’s significantly more than the $600 million Time Warner invested when it bought the stake nearly three years ago. Time Warner has since been acquired by AT&T and is now called WarnerMedia. (CNN is a division of WarnerMedia.)

The news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. WarnerMedia has publicly said in the past that it was considering selling its stake in Hulu.

But it’s also a sign of how the streaming wars have evolved in the last few years. Hulu was at one time a joint venture between several media titans: Disney, 21st Century Fox, Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Time Warner. None of those companies had majority control.

Now, Disney does. The company became the majority stakeholder in the streaming video service after it closed a deal for most of Fox’s assets last month. NBCUniversal is the only other owner with roughly 30%.

Disney has already made it clear that it envisions Hulu as a critical part of its streaming strategy. When the company debuted its Disney+ service to investors last week, it also spoke at length about the future of Hulu, which has more adult programming.

Disney executives talked about potentially bundling its services together for a discounted price. They also said they want all of their services, including Hulu, to reach profitability within the next several years.

Freer spoke to CNN in January about the company’s future and the possibility that WarnerMedia would sell its stake. He said at the time that Hulu has “great support from ownership” and “great access to capital to continue to invest.”

AT&T said in a statement that it will use proceeds from this transaction, along with “additional planned sales of non-core assets,” to reduce its debt. Moody’s said last year that AT&T’s $85 billion purchase of Time Warner would leave the company with more than $180 billion of debt.
