RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Cisco is competing with semiconductor chip makers Intel and Broadcom in a battle to acquire a developer of so-called “fiber to the chip” technology that increases the speed of data connectivity.

The company is named Luxtera. It is based in Carlsbad, Calif.

That’s according to a report from Bloomberg news.

“A final price for the closely held company hasn’t been determined but a deal will likely value Luxtera in the hundreds of millions of dollars, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are private,” Bloomberrg reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

The companies involved aren’t talking.

Tech companies are in a race to develop faster chips, and ecommerce giant Amazon is developing its own, according to The New York Times.

News website CRN notes that Luxgtera’s technology focuses on photonics, a means of integrating fiber optics with silicon electronics.
