Comic Startup Saturday AM Speeds Up With Google Fiber

Since Google Fiber began its service there last fall, subscribers to the webcomic magazine Saturday AM now get their biweekly issues 100 times faster. Artists around the world can quickly and easily send large files of their work for the publisher to lay out in the magazine, printed books or via its soon-to-launch mobile app.

And just as huge files are uploading and downloading on his computer, founder Frederick Jones can simultaneously hold a Google Hangout with his distributed team around the world. There’s no need for him to open an office for his still bootstrapped startup—he has the Internet connection and speed he needs at his townhouse in the fast-growing town adjacent Research Triangle Park.

“When you are a digital publisher and you’re dealing with content that is high res files (…), having fast upload and download speeds is essential,” says Jones, a former video game industry executive who started his publishing company in 2013.

Also important for a startup, he says, is saving $20 a month on the Internet bill.

As Google Fiber opens its “Fiber Space” in downtown Raleigh today and prepares to spread its service beyond its initial test region in Morrisville, Jones is a testament to the value of uber-fast fiber Internet to small and startup businesses, especially those based at home.
