Don Weisler, a former senior executive at Lenovo, will lead HP’s hardware division as CEO under Meg Whitman’s plan to split the technology giant into two parts.

Weisler bolted Lenovo for HP in 2011 and took over HP’s PC group last year.  Lenovo now leads in global PC sales followed by HP.

Under the HP (NYSE: HPQ) strategy announced early Monday, Weisler also will direct the printer group in a new company with $60 billion in annual revenue that is focused on hardware.

HP will be battle Lenovo on multiple fronts, including servers which Lenovo expanded further into last week with its addition of the x86 server business from IBM in a deal valued at $2.1 billion.

He spent three years and three months as a vice president and chief operating officer of Lenovo’s Mobile Internet Device and Home (MIDH) group before joining HP.

Before that, he was vice president and general manager for South Asia from January 2007 to September 2008.

Another former senior Lenovo executive, David Schmoock, left Lenovo to join Dell, the No. 3 PC manufacturer.

In addition to this, Weisler led the Global Transaction Model globally. Prior to this, Weisler was the General Manager of Korea, ASEAN and ANZ where he was responsible for Lenovo’s complete business in these markets.

“With more than 23 years of experience in the IT industry, Weisler has held numerous key executive positions across multiple geographies in the IT and telecommunications sectors. Before joining Lenovo, as a General Manager at Telstra Corporation, Australia’s leading telecommunications company, he was responsible for Telstra’s Conferencing and Collaboration products and services division. He also had a successful 11-year career at Acer, where he was the Managing Director of Acer UK having previously established and operated Acer’s business in Central and Eastern Europe as Managing Director of the region.
