AT&T is announcing 130 job openings in North Carolina in retail sales, technician and call center positions.

Of those openings, 31 are in the Triangle according to the company:

  • Chapel Hill: Hiring two new technicians
  • Durham: Filling one existing IT job; and five existing retail jobs
  • Raleigh: Filling 13 new retail jobs and filling seven existing retail positions; hiring two new technicians and filling one existing technician job

Thursday’s announcement follows the company’s $1.6 billion investment in the state between 2011 and 2013. AT&T says the investment was designed to enhance network speed, reliability, coverage and performance for residents and business customers.

Expansion and upgrades are part of what AT&T calls its “Project Velocity IP,” or VIP. IP refers to Internet Protocol.

Upgrades include:

  • 878 cell cell sites, additional wireless and wired network connectivity and additional broadband connections.
  • Expansion of the U-verse Internet and video service
  • Adding fiber connections to 180 multi-tenant business buildings and business parks

In 2013, AT&T hired more than 1,100 people across North Carolina to keep up with network expansion and retail demand, among others.

“North Carolina residents depend on our fast and reliable Internet connections more and more every day, whether it’s instant access to files and apps at work, watching a video at home, or even receiving updates from connected cars or home monitors,” said Venessa Harrison, president of AT&T North Carolina. “AT&T is making robust investments locally to make sure that residents can take full advantage of the latest services and tools, and that businesses have the speed they need to compete and grow.”
