Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst says in an interview with China Daily that the world’s top Linux software developer and services provider wants to do more business in that country.

As part of that plan, Red Hat will add 100 additional employees by the end of this year and also consider opening new offices.

Red Hat recently launched an operation in Beijing.

Whitehurst notes that IT spending and the “cloud computing” market are both growing.

“He explained that China has a bigger market potential than other developed countries such as the US for cloud computing development because the country isn’t burdened by the old system, making it easier to build a new one,” the newspaper said.

He also noted that Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), which is based in Raleigh, has yet to capitalize on the China market opportunity.

“Although China has yet to contribute a big share to Red Hat’s global revenues, lagging behind Japan, Australia and the US, the market still has huge potential, which cannot be underestimated, the CEO said,” China Daily reported.

The newspaper noted that Red Hat recently topped $1 billion in revenue for the first time and aims to reach $3 billion over the next five years.

Whitehurst also touted Linux to China Daily readers.

“The open-source Linux system is the hero behind the scene. Most of the stock exchange market systems are based on the Linux system,” said Whitehurst.

The CEO pointed out that Red Hat is focused on two primary future markets – the enterprise sector with Linux and cloud computing.
