Charles Craig, a former executive with Ernst & Young and the Biotechnology Industry Organization, is the new president of the Georgia Biomedical Partnership.

His appointment was announced Thursday. He is the group’s first full-time president.

“The life sciences industry is the key driver of 21st century improvements in the health and well-being of people globally,” said Craig, who wrote numerous reports for E&Y about the global biotech industry. “Georgia’s life sciences companies, universities, hospitals, state and federal public health advocates, and economic development groups are world leaders and innovators in these efforts. I look forward to working with them to help meet their goals and to make Georgia a premier place for life sciences industry development.”

Craig was a staff writer, managing editor and executive editor of Thomson’s BioWorld Publishing Group, which includes BioWorld Today, a leading publication reporting on the life sciences industry. He won two national writing awards from the Newsletter Publishers Foundation. He has been involved in biotech for the past 10 years.
At BIO, he was director of publications.

“His extensive knowledge of the life sciences industry, nationally and internationally, and familiarity with key issues and challenges facing our companies will serve us well as we continue building our organization in support of Georgia’s fast growing life sciences industry,” said Russell Medford, president and CEO of AtheroGenics. He is chair of the biomedical partnership.

GBP was launched in 1989. Members include companies, research institutions and universities, government groups and corporate service providers involved in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostics, medical informatics and related businesses

“The decision to name a full-time president reflects the rapid growth of our organization under (Jack) Spencer’s leadership,” Medford said, referring the the group’s first president. “It also reflects a commitment by the GBP to work aggressively with our members, other industry organizations, governments, universities and public health groups in Georgia to foster an environment where life sciences companies can succeed and grow. The GBP wants Georgia to have a life sciences industry that is second to none and that benefits the entire state.”
