A California company that serves 1 million doctors with drug-reference and other tools for mobile computers has bought Modality Inc. for its expertise in delivering medical applications to Apple devices.

Epocrates said it had acquired Modality. The San Mateo, Calif.,-headquartered Epocrates did not disclose the terms of the deal.

“As a leader in providing technology solutions, we have a tremendous responsibility to amplify our development efforts that support clinicians’ daily work flow and meet their information needs,” said Rose Crane, chief executive officer for Epocrates. “We have the trust of more than 1 million health care professionals and, with Modality, a richer, advanced Apple development expertise.”

The iPad is great for doctors, Epocrates said, “because it is the portable size of a patient’s medical chart and has the power of a desktop computer.”

“As part of Epocrates, Inc., we will continue to develop innovative Apple iOS applications that support clinicians’ point-of-care needs,” a statement on Modality’s website says. “We have historically worked with many of the world’s leading publishers and content experts and will continue to do so to develop medical, training and reference applications for Apple iOS devices.”

Since beginning to create Apple applications, Modality said, it has released more than 140 products. They let doctors do online research from their portable devices.

Epocrates says it serves more than 45 percent of the doctors in the U.S.
