It’s innovation awards time at N.C. State. NCSU has selected five projects to receive funding, picked its top entrepreneurs, honored 15 startups launched over the last year, and acknowledged 57 patent winners. Just when you thought there’s an emoji for everything, Apple is adding hundreds more. The tech giant announced on Friday that next week’s iOS update will include more expressive smiley faces, gender-neutral options, mythical creatures, clothing, food and animals. It previewed more than two dozen emoji that fit into these categories, including a hedgehog, a carton of Chinese takeout, a giraffe, fairy, dinosaur, broccoli, sled, a scarf and vampire. It’s one of the biggest tech funds in the world. And it’s investing… fast. The Softbank Vision Fund was unveiled less than a year ago, backed by Saudi Arabia and Japan’s SoftBank. By May it had raised $93 billion, out of a planned $100 billion, to spend on technology businesses of the future. Saudi Arabia is the biggest Vision Fund investor, followed by SoftBank. Other investors include Apple, Qualcomm, Foxconn, Sharp and Mubadala, the sovereign wealth fund of the United Arab Emirates. Consumer privacy has taken a back seat as the Trump administration takes it first steps in writing the guidelines for autonomous vehicles. Cars and trucks that will use technology to drive themselves promise to change transportation. But they raise countless new privacy issues: How will the data they collect be used?
