FAYETTEVILLE – Fiber network provider Metronet says it has installed “more than 170 miles” of fiber in Fayetteville, thus bringing high-speed internet access to a “majority of households and businesses.”
Begun in 2021, Metronet is investing $70 million in the network that delivers multi-gigabit speeds. Fayetteville was the first city selected by Indiana-based Metronet which now has operations in 16 states.
The company certified Fayetteville as a “gigabit city,” citing the reach of the network. The title is “earned once a majority of households and business locations have access to Metronet’s symmetrical fiber optic internet speeds of at least 1 gigabit (1,000 megabits per second),” the company says. The city is the latest of several communities served by Metronet to achieve that status.
Metronet is one of several providers expanding high-speed internet access across North Carolina. But unlike several providers doing so with assistance from federal and state government funding, Metronet is funded by private equity firms Oak Hill Capital and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.
Wilson, N.C., also touts itself as a “gigabit city” thanks to hits city-owned and operated Greenlight network.
Pricing for 1 gigabit service is $59.95 per month.
Slower speeds are available: 100 megabit at $29.95; 500 megabit at $49.95.
