DURHAM – Wolfspeed could be announcing soon further expansion of its semiconductor production capacity even as it continues construction of a mammoth plant in Chatham County.

CEO Gregg Lowe made specific mentions of further expansion in a conference call with Wall Street analysts on Wednesday to discuss the Durham-based manufacturer’s most recent quarterly earnings. He cited growing demand for Wolfspeed products as the reason for further ggrowth.

Lowe noted a “soon-to-be announced fab” for chip production.

Later he added “construction and ramp of our next fab.”

“We should have an update for you on those plans very soon,” Lowe said, according to a transcript of the conference call from financial news site SeekingAlpha.

Wolfspeed CEO remains optimistic despite missing Street’s revenue expectations

The first reference cites the new Chatham County plant which Wolfspeed has named after the late John Palmour, one of the company’s founds:

“Long-term, The John Palmour Manufacturing Center for Silicon Carbide is critical to addressing the supply-demand disconnect that will support our expanding device footprint at both Mohawk Valley and a soon-to-be announced fab, as well as the ever growing demand for merchant wafers. Construction of The JP is progressing well since groundbreaking in September and things remain on track as we updated during our last Investor Day.

The second mentions the under construction Wolfspeed plant in New York state:

“The learnings from Mohawk Valley have given us a blueprint on how we will approach the construction and ramp of our next fab. We should have an update for you on those plans very soon.”
