CARY – After eight years of partnership and volunteering from 4,800 workers, MetLife and the Raleigh-headquartered Rise Against Hunger have now packed more than one million meals.

The organizations surpassed that milestone earlier this month, a spokesperson for MetLife told WRAL TechWire.

In addition to volunteer events held in the Triangle, the company hosted 20 other such events globally to provide high-protein, vitamin-rich meals to those in need during that time span.

The partnership is a part of the company’s pledge to donate 800,000 employee volunteer hours globally, which it made as a part of the firm’s commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the spokesperson said.

At a recent event in Cary, 140 volunteers packed more than 40,000 meals.  The company, which is ramping up hiring in the Triangle, will also facilitate volunteer opportunities with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina this year.

“Rise Against Hunger’s work starts with a meal, ensuring the people we serve have the nutrition they need while long-term food security projects are implemented and take root,” said Edna Ogwangi, Rise Against Hunger Chief Programs Officer.

The Raleigh-headquartered nonprofit notes on the organization’s website that in 2021, it coordinated more than 17 million packed meals and delivered more than 27.3 meals across the globe that helped feed more than 2.7 million people.
