CHARLOTTE – Health insurance giant Centene Corporation will announced today that it is bringing several thousand jobs to Charlotte, according to media reports in the Queen City.

Gov. Roy Cooper has scheduled a press conference this morning to formally disclose the jobs announcement.

Centene already has two operations in North Carolina – offices in Raleigh and Rocky Mount – which employ more than 400 people, according to Centene’s website.

“Centene believes that quality healthcare is best delivered locally.” the company says. “We are committed to our members and the communities they call home.”

Both the Charlotte Business Journal and the Charlotte Observer reported the news Tuesday.

The Business Journal says Centene plans to build a “technology campus” of up to 1 million square feet in size and will employ as many as 3,000 people.

The Observer cited two unnamed sources for the report.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce and the North Carolina Economic Development Partnership drescribe the news as a “significant economic development announcement.” A press conference is set for 11:30 a.m.

Centene has yet to comment. The firm is based in St. Louis.

The Department of Commerce also declined comment.
