RALEIGH – Seventeen employees at Sage Therapeutics’ operation in Brier Creek are being laid off.

According to a layoff notice filed with the N.C. Department of Commerce filed last week and published Wednesday, the layoffs began as of Sept. 8.

The company said 290 workers at the Massachusetts-based firm would be affected.

Earlier Sage said 188 layoffs were planned.

The decision to cut jobs came after the FDA did not approve a drug from Sage to treat clinical depression. The drug was approved for treatment of postpartum depression, according to Reuters news service.

Biogen, which has a large operation in Research Triangle Park, is a partner with Sage on the drug. Reuters noted.
