RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Drug giant Biogen is laying off some 1,000 employees – or 11% of its workforce – with the first cuts being disclosed in Cambridge, Mass. where the company is based.

There’s no word yet about what is happening at its RTP facilities where the company maintains a significant presence with some 1,900 workers.

Biogen announced plans for the layoffs on July 25.

“We had very prosperous times in the more recent history of the company. And we have seen a reversal of fortunes in some of those products,” said CEO Christopher Viehbacher, according to a report from Reuters.
