GREENSBORO – Boom Supersonic has hired Scott Powell, a 38-year veteran of aerospace giant Boeing to lead ongoing development of the propulsion system for its promised supersonic jet.

In this role, Powell will be responsible for leading the development, industrialization, certification, and integration of Symphony,” the company, which is building its aircraft factory near Piedmont Triad International Airport, said Tuesday. His title is senior vice president of Symphony, the company’s name for the propulsion system.

The news is the latest in a series of announcements the company has made in recent months about aircraft and engine developments.

“We’ve made significant design progress on Symphony,” said Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom, in the announcement. “Adding Scott’s leadership and experience overseeing certifications for a wide range of civil and military propulsion systems only further strengthens our path forward with Symphony. We’re thrilled to have him onboard.”

At Boeing, Powell filled many roles, including four years as the Engineering Propulsion Leader for the Dreamliner leading to the 787-8/-9, responsible for propulsion system design, development, test, build, and business management.
