RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The latest edition of the WRAL TechWire Jobs Report reveals another drop in the total number of local job listings—to the second-lowest total number of postings for 2023.

And N.C. State economist Dr. Mike Walden worries what will happen to hiring if the Federal Reserve continues to up interest rates.

“The good news is the State labor market continues to improve.  The question is whether the improvement will continue as the Federal Reserve will likely raise interest rates more in an effort to further slow the pace of economic growth and moderate inflation,” Walden told WRAL TechWire on Tuesday after the state disclosed the unemployment rate remained 3.8%.

“Interestingly, just as in the national report, sectors that gained the most jobs – leisure/hospitality, construction, and government – were the exact sectors that have had trouble attracting employees in the past two years.  Perhaps this is a sign the post-pandemic labor market is moving back to what it was pre-pandemic.”
