CARY – Epic Games’ $520 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission is the largest to date when it comes to children’s privacy. But it’s not the largest overall by far.
Facebook’s $5 billion FTC privacy/data protection settlement in 2019 is by far the largest.
But Epic’s agreement is not small, either.
Here are some other big settlements:
- Google and YouTube were hit with $170 million in a 2019 settlement – again over children’s privacy. At that time it was the record deal for violations of the Children’s Online Protection Act, or COPPA.
- Twitter paid a $150 million fine over data privacy earlier this year.
- In 2014, Apple refunded $32.5 million in refunds related to in-app purchases by children.
