RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Just because companies – particularly in the tech sector – are making layoffs doesn’t mean they have stopped hiring. And even workers being cut loose in many cases are not staying unemployed very long. Those are among the reasons why so many leading companies across the Triangle are continuing to post open jobs.

Let’s take a look.

Pendo, a so-called “unicorn” emerging startup with a valuation of $1 billion or more, made headlines recently with a number of layoffs. But the company still has “Help Wanted” listings.

“We have 900+ employees globally. We haven’t made any additional layoffs,” says Pendo’s Laura Baverman. “And yes, we are still hiring for select roles. You can find them all on our careers page.”

Meanwhile, Jessica Mitcsh (the founder and CEO of tech training firm Momentum in Durham) says her company is staying very busy helping people find new jobs. She’s often in touch with companies and job seekers. And she has seen a very interesting trend that should give hope to tech workers who have been laid off.

“I think there’s general excitement that layoffs from the tech giants will make great talent available for the rest of the industry,” Mitsch says. “I don’t foresee any talented people who’ve recently been laid off from big tech firms having a problem finding a new role.”

Demand for tech workers remains very high in the Triangle and North Carolina as shown by the latest IT Job Trends report from the North Carolina Technology Association. And as you can see in the following list, positions are posted at a wide range of Triangle companies.

As the chart (below) shows nearly half the companies have as many or more open jobs than reported months ago.
