RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – IBM’s top executive in India has warned employees about moonlighting.

“…while an IBMers’ time outside of work is their own, it also requires them to avoid engaging in activities that create a conflict of interest,” IBM India managing director Sandip Patel said in an internal note sent to its employees as reported by The Economic Times. “…if you advance a personal interest, whether  directly or indirectly, at the expense of IBM’s interest, it is treated as serious conflict of interest and violation of trust,” the paper says, noting it has “seen” the note.

The newspaper also points out that moonlighting has become a subject of hot debate in India. Two companies with a presence in North Carolina – WiPro and Infosys – have been caught up in the debate. WiPro “sacked some 300 techies” for moonlighting, it adds. However, Infosys allows workers to “take up external gigs,” it reports.

IBM operates one of its largest campuses in RTP.
