MEBANE – Thermo Fisher has bought a property for its new manufacturing base in Mebane as the company prepares to bring some 200 high-paying jobs to Orange County.

The property, located at 6086 West Ten Road in Mebane, was bought by Thermo Fisher for about $41 million, according to a deed recorded with the Orange County Register of Deeds in September.

According to the deed, filed on September 14, the seller of the property is the Buckhorn Industrial Park, LLC, an Ohio company, for which Al. Neyer, LLC is the manager.

A promotional brochure for the property from Al. Neyer depicts two buildings on the property.

Last November, Thermo Fisher announced it would bring between 150 and 200 jobs to Mebane, with the intent to set up a new manufacturing base that would be a part of a multi-million dollar contract with the U.S. government.

“The new manufacturing facility will help the U.S. meet future demand surges for vital laboratory products while bringing more high-quality jobs to North Carolina,” according to Mark Stevenson, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Thermo Fisher Scientific, in a statement at the time.

Thermo Fisher bought Wilmington-based PPD for $17.4 billion in December 2021, and last month, the group landed a ten-year contract worth $548 million from the National Cancer Institute.  The company has also partnered with Raleigh-based MAKO Medical to validate the TaqMan Monkeypox Virus Microbe Detection Assay, which was developed by Applied Biosystems, itself a genetic analysis business of Thermo Fisher.

Thermo Fisher has facilities in Greenville, Durham, Raleigh, Asheville, High Point, and Wilmington.

The Triangle Business Journal also reported the purchase, and noted that Al. Neyer was the developer of a Garner facility that now houses an Amazon warehouse.  Amazon workers in the Triangle are working to form a union, and told WRAL TechWire that other workers from other North Carolina facilities have reached out to connect.
