CHAPEL HILL – The Chapel Hill-based group Friends of the Program, a licensing program for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s men’s basketball players, will soon launch an Instagram campaign designed to help connect caregivers with resources and assistance.

The campaign, “Point to the Passer,” will honor the life of Linda “Mama” Woods, the former executive assistant to Tar Heels head coaches Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge, and was announced this week.

The campaign will be supported by the Toronto, Canada-based Trualta, a provider of a skills-based technology learning platform that helps family caregivers acquire knowledge and information.  The company’s software, which the company says is “clinically validated,” is integrated into the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Caregiver Portal, which is free to use.

The campaign

According to a statement, the campaign launches on Monday, March 7, and anyone can join.

The statement notes that roughly one in four adults in North Carolina provide regular care or support to “an older adult with a long-term illness or disability, meaning there are between 1.4-1.7 million unpaid family caregivers in the state.”

Other research estimates that across the country, there are about 50 million Americans providing unpaid care to a family member.

The campaign will honor Ms. Woods, who worked for the team for 38 years, and recently passed away.  The statement notes that Ms. Woods embodied “selflessness and caring for others.”
