RALEIGH-DURHAM AIRPORT – Travel through Raleigh-Durham Airport during the week of the Thanksgiving holiday, Monday, Nov. 22 through Sunday, Nov. 28, was the busiest week of travel “since the pandemic began,” Stephanie Hawco, director of media relations for the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority told WRAL TechWire.

According to Hawco, more than 246,000 passengers traveled through the RDU last week, compared to just 103,000 passengers during the Thanksgiving week in 2020.

Totals for November will be released later this month, Hawco noted.

The airport will continue to monitor public health guidelines, Hawco said in response to a WRAL TechWire inquiry about how the emergence of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 may impact airport operations or traffic.

“We took action at the onset of the pandemic to protect the health and safety of RDU guests by enacting measures that comply with CDC guidance,” said Hawco.  “Those measures include enhanced cleaning and disinfecting practices, installing hand sanitizing stations and acrylic barriers, adding signage that promotes public health best practices and establishing a Guest Experience team that provides oversight of RDU’s stringent requirements.”

“Under a federal mandate, airport guests are also required to wear masks at all times in the terminals to help prevent the spread of illness,” Hawco said.  “RDU will continue to monitor public health guidelines and consult with local, state and national health experts to ensure guests can continue to fly with confidence.”
