CHARLOTTE – In a challenging year for health care providers, UNC Rex Healthcare again topped Business North Carolina’s 2021 list of North Carolina’s Best Hospitals, an annual ranking of the state’s top medical centers. The Raleigh-based hospital, which is part of UNC Health, received high marks for its bariatric surgery, cardiac care, knee and hip replacement and spine surgery offerings from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.

The top of this year’s list includes both larger institutions in metro areas such as Asheville, Charlotte and the Triangle and hospitals in smaller cities including Gastonia, New Bern and Pinehurst. Duke University Hospital snagged the No. 2 slot, followed by CaroMont Regional Medical Center, FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Mission Hospital, Atrium Health Cabarrus, CarolinaEast Medical Center, Moses Cone Hospital, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and UNC Hospitals.

Rankings are calculated using more than 25 metrics, including information provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The report includes patient-satisfaction surveys, as well as infection, readmission and mortality rates for common procedures. Other factors include safety report cards by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit The Leapfrog Group, distinction awards from insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and national performance ratings from U.S. News & World Report.
