CARY – Epic Games remains embroiled in high-stake antitrust suits with Apple and Google, but the legal combat hasn’t stopped the company from prepping a new version of its globally popular Fortnite for release next week along with so-called “next generation” gaming consoles.

“Next gen = next week!! Once you’ve taken in that sweet smell of unboxing a brand-new Xbox or PlayStation (or both, if you’re super lucky), a next-gen version of Fortnite will be ready and waiting for you to download,” says the Fortnite team in a blogpost.

“The Fortnite builds on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 aren’t simply tweaked last-gen builds but new native ones to harness the power of the new consoles!”

With gaming demand soaring due to the pandemic, Xbox and PlayStation are gearing up to make their technology even faster and crisper. And Fortnite says veteran as well as new Fortnite players will enjoy what they are offering.

“If you’re already a Fortnite player, you’ll easily be able to continue your progress, and if you’re new to Fortnite, it’ll be a great time to jump in,” the team promises.

“Whether you’re a veteran player or looking to play for the first time, you’ll be able to download the game on your new console Day 1 and enjoy a truly ‘next-gen’ Fortnite experience.”

As for veteran players making the transition, Fortnite offers another promise:

“No matter what platforms you played Fortnite on previously (or plan to continue playing alongside your new consoles), crossplay remains available, and your progression and cosmetics carry over to the new platforms.”
