NEW YORK –Private equity firm Blackstone has tapped Dr. Mark McClellan, a physician and economist who served as both the commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as a senior advisor.

McClellan will advise across the firm’s businesses, with a focus on Blackstone Growth (BXG) and Blackstone Life Sciences (BXLS).

“This is a critical time for entrepreneurship in the healthcare sector, and I’m looking forward to working with Blackstone and their diverse partner companies to develop innovative and efficient approaches to address unmet medical needs,” McClellan said in a statement.

Blackstone is a private equity firm with large presence in the Triangle.

The Blackstone Entrepreneurs Network launched in 2011 as a collaborative effort bringing together Triangle universities and the Council for Entrepreneurial Development to support, launch and mentor new startups in the region.

The Blackstone Charitable Foundation, affiliated with the Blackstone private equity firm, committed about $3.6 million to the program.
