RALEIGH – Several hundred positions from firms across North Carolina will be available at a “virtual” job fair being put on by the North Carolina Technology Association.
The online event is set for May 20.
Job seekers can participate at no costs. And hundreds have already signed up to participate, uploading resumes as well as other requested information.

Many but not all of the jobs are related to information technology.
“When exhibitors register for the job fair we do ask them to report on the number of job vacancies and specify how many of those are IT specific positions,” says NC Tech’s Michelle Calton. “Collectively, employers have reported 500+ job vacancies with over half of those openings in IT. Not all employers provided numbers.”

NC Tech, a business lobbying and advocacy group based in Raleigh, puts on job fairs regularly. This time it is “virtual” due to the North Carolina “stay at home” order.
While North Carolina’s jobless rate has soared due to the pandemic, technology jobs have been relatively safe and many high-tech related firms or with information technology needs are continuing to hire. Few have made layoffs, according to a survey of tech executives conducted by NC Tech.
More than 40 percent of firms are hiring, another 50 are preserving jobs, and only 11 percent have made layoffs or instituted furloughs.
Thousands of IT jobs remained open in March, according to NC Tech’s monthly jobs report. But that labor picture is expected to change one April data is analyzed, says Brooks Raiford, NC Tech’s CEO.
“There was a dip in open positions, but not dramatic [in March],” Raiford told WRAL TechWire. “We’ll have the April numbers soon and I would anticipate a more noticeable drop.”
However, not all participating companies are looking to hire.
“A few of the exhibitors are not hiring rather they are participating to offer options for those who may be interested in training and new certifications,” Calton says.
