CHARLOTTE – Duke Energy, one of the largest energy holding companies in the U.S., chose five North Carolina counties to participate in its 2019 Site Readiness Program.

Officials from Carteret, Cumberland, New Hanover, Rockingham and Rutherford counties will work with the company to create strategic plans to improve the sites for future development.

The program entails collaborating with consulting firms and local officials to market sites for possible future relocation and expansion activity. Each site is also able to apply for a $10,000 Duke Energy grant to improve their plans.

“We have a specific focus on site readiness, industrial recruitment and working together with our state and local partners,” said Stu Heishman, Duke Energy’s vice president of economic development.

Duke Energy said the program has helped prepare properties that have won 18 major projects in North Carolina since 2005, resulting in more than 5,100 new jobs.
