RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – A decision made long ago is finally moving toward execution as Bayer Crop Science has formally disclosed plans to move 500 jobs from RTP to St. Louis following the closing a year ago of its multi-billion-dollar merger with Monsanto.

Bayer also is closing its Crop Science HQ in the Park as part of the move.

However, the environmental science business will remain in Cary, a company spokesperson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Just how many jobs will actually be lost in RTP remains to be seen since BASF a year ago disclosed plans to acquire $9 billion in assets – including some in RTP – from Bayer Crop Science. The deal included moving four facilities and more than 360 former Bayer employees into the fold of BASF’s Research Triangle Park operations.

The deal, according to Jim Shamp writing for the NC Biotech Center, includes:

  •  The former RTP Bayer Bee Center
  • The Paramount Parkway Innovation Center
  • Tech 3 building on Davis Drive
  • Bayer’s seeds business, including traits, research and breeding capabilities, and seed treatments
  • Bayer’s research and development platform for hybrid wheat
  • Bayer’s herbicide glufosinate-ammonium business and herbicide research projects
  • Bayer’s complete digital farming platform (xarvio)

The announcement from Lisa Safarian, president of Bayer’s commercial operations in North America, did not say exactly when all the jobs would be moved. Monsanto’s HQ was in St. Louis prior to the merger.

“Bayer’s headquarters was in Raleigh, North Carolina,” Safarian said at a Tuesday news conference. “And so that headquarters is closing, and so we will be locating those individuals to St. Louis.”

According to a report from the Associated Press, Bayer could get more than $44 million in Missouri economic development incentives.

The jobs will pay on average $110,000.
